1. Class 1: Pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
2. Class 2: Throttle-assisted with a maximum speed of 20 mph.
3. Class 3: Pedal-assist and may also have a throttle, with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.

Class 1 and 2 E-Bikes

Good news for Class 1 and 2 e-bike riders! You can ride these bikes on most bike paths, bike lanes, and multi-use trails throughout Carlsbad.

This means you can cruise along the scenic coastal bike paths, navigate through the city’s parks, and enjoy many of the trails designed for bicycles.

Just remember to be courteous to pedestrians and fellow cyclists, follow the posted signs, and watch out for vehicle traffic.

While Carlsbad has an abundance of bike lanes, there are many streets without them, especially in residential areas. You can ride in the street on these roads.

Class 3 E-Bikes

Class 3 e-bikes have a few more restrictions. While you can ride them on streets and in bike lanes, you’re not allowed to take them on multi-use trails or bike paths that are designated for lower-speed bicycles.

This means sticking to the road or dedicated bike lanes for these faster e-bikes.

All riders operating a Class 3 e-bike must wear a helmet.

Specific Restrictions in Carlsbad

• Beaches
  E-bikes are generally not allowed on the sand or designated pedestrian-only areas of the beach. However, you can ride them on paved paths adjacent to the beach.

• Carlsbad Village
  The bustling Carlsbad Village area can be tricky. While e-bikes are allowed, it’s important to be extra cautious and ride at a slower speed due to the high foot traffic. Be especially alert in parking areas as cars will not see you if you dart out from behind parked cars and buildings.
• State Parks
  Certain state parks have their own rules regarding e-bikes. For example, e-bikes are not permitted on unpaved trails within the state parks. Always check the specific park’s regulations before heading out. Most post signs in their parking areas and at trailheads.

Safety and Etiquette

Wherever you ride, safety should always be your top priority. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride:

• Helmet Up: California law requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet. There are no exceptions. While adults over 18 have the option to wear a helmet, it’s a good idea for everyone on an e-bike. Your bike can travel up to 28mph. An accident with something traveling in the opposite direction at just 20 mph means you will experience a 48mph impact. Protect your noggin and you can tell crazy stories afterward.
• Speed Limits: Observe local speed limits and slow down in crowded areas.
• Be Alert: Keep an eye out for pedestrians (especially young children), pets, other bikers, and motor vehicles.
• Signal Your Moves: Use hand signals and make your intentions clear to others around you. Even if your bike has integrated turn signals, others may not see them. Using hand signals gives you more of a chance of being seen.
