Best Places to Ride in Oceanside
Local Favorites & Hidden Gems to Explore
Oceanside might be one of the most underrated bike destinations in Southern California.
You’ve got coastal views, long flat river trails, and easy connections to Carlsbad and beyond.
Whether you’re cruising for fun, getting in a workout, or showing off your new ride, Oceanside delivers.
Here are some of the best places to ride your bike in Oceanside and why locals keep coming back to them.
The San Luis Rey River Trail in Oceanside
San Luis Rey River Trail (The Local Favorite)
If there’s only one ride you do in Oceanside, make it this one.
The San Luis Rey River Trail is 9.5 miles long, paved, and almost completely separated from cars, making it one of the safest and most enjoyable rides in the area.
It’s a local favorite among cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters.
The western end of the trail is just two blocks from the beach and winds inland along the river. You may see snowy egrets, blue herons, and other birds along the way. Kids will especially love the playgrounds and athletic fields of Mance Buchanan Park on the trail’s east side.
The San Luis Rey River Trail runs between Neptune Way (Oceanside) and N Santa Fe Ave (Oceanside), with parking available at both ends.
- Flat and smooth → perfect for beginners
- Scenic river views and wildlife
- Just blocks from the beach
This is the ride we recommend most often at the shop. It’s long enough to feel like an adventure, but easy enough for just about anyone.

Most Riders Wait Too Long
We see it all the time…
Someone comes in thinking something major is wrong with their bike, or tells us that it just “feels off.”
And more often than not, it just needs a quick tune-up.
A short time later, they head out for a ride and say the same thing, “It feels like it did when I first got it!”
Don’t wait to get your bike feeling new again. Spring is here, and a tune-up will keep you rolling smoothly along the coast, or wherever you ride.
A lone bike awaits its owner’s return on The Strand.
Oceanside Strand & Pier Ride (Classic Coastal Cruise)
If you want that “this is why I bought a bike” feeling, this is it.
Start near the pier and cruise along the coast. You’ll pass:
- The iconic Oceanside Pier
- Harbor views and boats
- Beachfront paths with nonstop ocean breezes.
Pro tip: go early morning or just before sunset. Midday can get crowded, especially on holidays and over the summer.
Coastal Ride to Carlsbad Village (Best Extended Ride)
Ready to stretch your ride a bit?
Hop on Coast Highway and head south into Carlsbad. This route connects beach towns with incredible ocean views the entire way and is a favorite for longer rides.
Why riders love it:
- Easy to moderate effort
- Tons of coffee stops and food along the way
- Feels like a mini coastal road trip.

You can keep going all the way to Encinitas if you’re feeling ambitious.
Pro Tip: Be sure you’ve got a full battery charge if you’re on an e-bike. The ride back from Encinitas has a nice hill in Carlsbad.
Coastal Rail Trail (The Future of Riding in North County)
This one is still growing, but it’s worth knowing about.
The Coastal Rail Trail is a developing bike path that will eventually run over 40 miles along the coast from Oceanside to downtown San Diego.
Open in distinct sections while still under development, The Coastal Rail Trail traverses beachside communities in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Solana Beach. Slated to eventually run 44 miles between Oceanside and San Diego alongside the Coaster commuter rail, the rail-trail brings a fun and practical active transportation route to this stretch of the Southern California Coast, and once completed, it’ll be one of the best long-distance bike routes in California.

Final Thought
If you’ve got a bike and you’re not riding Oceanside, you’re missing out!
Start with the river trail. Add in a coastal cruise. Then branch out.
That’s how most riders here fall in love with it.
If you’ve got friends and family visiting and you need a rental, stop by our Carlsbad shop and pick one up. Sorry, we don’t have rentals in Ocenaside, but you can buy an e-bike or get one tuned up there!
