New Regulations Coming to Del Mar
Ordinance Brings Del Mar In Line With Other Communities
The new regulations will bring the city in line with surrounding communities like Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach.
Many of the proposed regulations have become standard in North County, but needed to be made official in Del Mar’s city code.
Under the ordinance, riders will be required to wear and strap helmets, and follow all applicable laws such as yielding to pedestrians and obeying traffic signals and signs.
E-bikes will be required to use designated bike paths or bikeways whenever there is one available, and prohibits bikes from riding in any park or preserve, and along trails and walkways at the San Dieguito Lagoon or River Valley, unless otherwise noted.
The City Council is still ironing out rules on whether bikes should be banned from all sidewalks, or only sidwalks in specific areas.
Under the new ordinance, law enforcement would be able to divert first time offenders to a safety training course, instead of a fine.
The new ordinance was also reviewed and approved by the sheriff’s department.
It will come back to the City Council for a second reading on April 21 and if passed again, it will go into effect 30 days later.
