Riding Together
New Rules, Same Great Adventure
If it feels like e-bike laws are changing everywhere lately, you’re not imagining it.
This week, the City of San Diego approved new e-bike regulations.
Carlsbad has announced additional enforcement efforts and even launched a way for residents to report dangerous riding.
Oceanside continues to crack down on reckless behavior, and San Clemente actively enforces safe riding in its busiest pedestrian areas.
So what does all of this mean?
The good news is simple: E-bikes aren’t going anywhere.
In fact, quite the opposite.
More people than ever are choosing e-bikes for commuting, recreation, running errands, and simply enjoying our beautiful coastline. That’s a win for riders, local businesses, and our communities. But with that growth comes a responsibility we all share.
The recent changes aren’t aimed at responsible riders—they’re aimed at dangerous behavior.
- Speeding through crowded sidewalks.
- Ignoring stop signs.
- Riding recklessly around pedestrians.
- Operating modified bikes that exceed legal limits.
The vast majority of e-bike owners ride safely every day. They wear helmets, follow traffic laws, slow down around pedestrians, and treat others with courtesy. Those are the riders who represent our community—and they’re the reason e-bikes continue to grow in popularity.
A Quick Reminder of the Rules
Across California:
- Follow the same traffic laws as bicycles.
- Ride with traffic.
- Obey stop signs and traffic signals.
- Wear a helmet.
- Know which class of e-bike you’re riding and where it’s permitted.
Individual cities may have additional rules regarding age requirements, riding locations, and enforcement, so it’s always worth checking local regulations before heading out.
Our Advice? Ride Like an Ambassador.
Every time you head out, you’re representing the entire e-bike community.
- Wave at pedestrians.
- Slow down when passing.
- Give people plenty of room.
- Make eye contact with drivers.
- Be predictable.
These simple habits help ensure that e-bikes remain welcome on our streets, trails, and coastal paths for years to come.
