We all forget something when packing our gear. That’s why we’ve put together a few checklists for your next two-wheeled trek.
These lists will make packing easier for three kinds of rides around Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Encinitas: Heading to the Beach, Hitting the Trails, and Commuting to Work.

🏖 Beach Ride Essentials
Planning to soak up some sun? Don’t forget:
✅ Beach towel
✅ Swimwear & flip flops
✅ Sunscreen & sunglasses
✅ Bike lock (sand and e-bikes don’t mix well unattended!)
✅ Insulated water bottle
✅ Portable speaker (just keep it chill)
✅ Small backpack or pannier to stash it all
🌴 Commuter Checklist
Rolling through Carlsbad Village, downtown Oceanside, or the streets of Encinitas? Bring:
✅ Lightweight lock
✅ Phone mount for maps & photos
✅ Credit card or digital wallet

✅ Bike lights (sunset comes quick!)

🌲 Trail Ride Must-Haves
Headed for the hills or nature trails? Pack this:
✅ Helmet (always!)
✅ Extra water + snacks or energy bars
✅ Mini bike pump and patch kit
✅ First-aid basics (bandages, wipes, etc.)
✅ Multi-tool
✅ Map or phone with GPS
✅ Bug spray and sunscreen (you will need both)
🧳 How to Pack Your Gear
Once you’ve got your checklist ready, the next question is: how do you carry it all?
Fortunately, bikes have more options for hauling gear, and you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or style to bring what you need.
For short rides or light loads, a rear rack basket or front-mounted basket can be perfect for tossing in your towel, a snack, or a quick change of clothes.
Look for baskets with bungee straps or closures to keep items from bouncing out when you hit a pothole. And consider specialty accessories like pet carriers, surfboard racks, and cargo trailers.
If you’re going a little farther or need to carry more, panniers — those side-mounted bags that attach to your bike rack — are an excellent choice. They’re weather-resistant, balanced, and often come with separate compartments to keep things like wet swimwear and electronics from mingling. Many even double as backpacks or totes once you arrive.
Cargo e-bikes take it a step further with built-in carrying space. Whether you’re transporting beach chairs, a picnic setup, or even a cooler, these bikes are designed for bulk, and the motor assist means you won’t feel weighed down. Some cargo e-bikes also have locking compartments or under-seat storage, giving you a safe spot to stash valuables when you stop for a swim or snack.
Before loading up, think about weight distribution. Heavier items should go lower and toward the center of the bike to maintain balance. Use straps or clips to secure anything loose, and always make sure your load doesn’t interfere with your wheels, pedals, or handlebars.
