New Tariffs Hit e-Bikes, Accessories & Parts
The Cost of Buying and Owning a New Bike Will Rise
Tariffs on imports from China have just been hit with a significant increase, and many countries that previously did not have tariffs on imports now do.
Even bikes that are assembled in the U.S. still include parts that are imported from other countries.
If you’re looking to buy an e-bike in Carlsbad, or keep your e-bike running, it’s important to understand how recent tariff changes may impact your wallet.
The (Recent) History of e-Bike Tariffs
Not that long ago, bikes were exempt from import tariffs. That all changed right as e-bike popularity grew.
On August 23, 2018, tariffs on e-bikes imported from China increased from zero to 25%, and the tariff on e-bike motors imported from China increased from four to 29%.
E-bike imports from other countries, including those in the European Union, were not impacted by these tariffs.
Most of the tariffs on e-bikes and parts from China were put “on hold” and did not make their way to the consumer.
Unfortunately, the hold had an expiration date, and in May 2024 it expired. This added 25% to the cost of most e-bikes from China, beginning June 14, 2024, and was immediately visible to consumers.
Retail prices jumped up!

New Tariffs Just Announced
This week, the U.S. announced new import tariffs, covering most countries. The new tariffs are complicated.
First, there’s a 10% Default or Base Tariff. This is added to any Reciprocal Tariff, based on the country of export.
For Chinese imports, it includes a new 34% tariff — on top of the existing 25% tariff from 2024.
These new tariffs are set to start by April 9th, and will increase the cost of purchasing an e-bike,
And not just purchasing your next bike – these tariffs impact accessories, tires, racks, helmets, and all kinds of bike gear.
Owning and maintaining a bike — any bike — just got more expensive.
There are countless lawsuits now entering the legal system over these tariffs, and while any of them may prevail, the process is long. We’re not likely to see rapid relief.
Impact on Carlsbad E-Bike Riders
For e-bike enthusiasts in Carlsbad, these tariff increases have several implications:
Rising Costs
The compounded tariffs have led to noticeable price increases for e-bikes and essential components. For instance, the cumulative effect of the tariffs will likely raise the total import duties on e-bikes to 45% or more. This escalation translates to higher retail prices, making new purchases and replacements more expensive.
Supply Chain Disruptions
The tariffs have caused disruptions in the supply chain, leading to potential delays in the availability of e-bikes and parts. Local bike shops might experience inventory shortages, affecting repair services and new sales.
Maintenance Expenses
With increased costs on imported parts, routine maintenance and repairs could become more costly, impacting the overall affordability of e-bike ownership.
