How to Safely Store Your E-Bike

6 Thing to Think About When Storing Your E-Bike (Even For Just a Few Weeks)

Many people ride their bikes year-round in Southern California. We’re lucky enough to have mostly good weather and lots of sunshine!

if you’re thinking of storing your bike for a period, there are a few things to keep in mind. Properly addressing these can help prevent accidents, damage, and potential hazards.

Here’s a short list of things to think about when storing your bike for a few weeks–or longer.

 1. Your Battery

The most significant concern with e-bikes is the lithium-ion battery. Improper storage or handling can lead to overheating, fires, or reduced battery life.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Storing the battery in a very hot or cold environment can lead to overheating or freezing, which can cause the battery to malfunction or, in rare cases, catch fire. Keep your battery away from heaters, furnaces, or other heat-producing equipment.
  • Store in a cool place: Make sure your storage area is cool and out of direct sunlight. Temperatures between 50°F and 77°F are ideal.
  • Avoid heat sources: Inspect the battery regularly: Periodically check for signs of damage like bulging or leaking. If you notice any issues, stop using the battery and consult a professional.
  • Don’t store with a full charge: Storing a battery for a long period when it’s fully charged or completely drained can degrade its performance over time, potentially leading to malfunction. After you top off your charge, take your bike for a quick spin around the neighborhood before storing the battery.

2. Fire Hazards

Lithium-ion batteries, if damaged or improperly stored, can pose a fire risk.

  • Charge in a well-ventilated area: Ensure your charging area is well-ventilated and not near flammable materials.
  • Don’t overcharge: Never leave the battery charging for extended periods unattended
  • Use the charger specifically designed for your e-bike: Using a generic battery charger or one belonging to a different e-bike, even if the bikes are from the same manufacturer, can lead to overheating.
  • Consider using a fireproof bag: If you’re particularly concerned, you can store or charge your battery in a fireproof bag or safe box to minimize risk.

3. Electrical Component Care

The electrical components of your e-bike, including wiring and controllers, need to be protected from moisture and dust.

  • Prevent water exposure: Water can short-circuit the electrical systems. Always dry the bike and battery after riding in wet conditions,  before you store the bike.
  • Keep away from dust and dirt: Dust buildup can affect electrical connections and lead to malfunctions. Use a breathable cover that protects your e-bike from dust while allowing air circulation.

4. Tire Pressure and Deformation

When storing your bike for long periods, tires can lose pressure or become deformed if left resting on the ground.

  • Elevate the bike: Use a bike stand or wall rack to lift the bike off the ground, especially if you will be storing it for more than a few weeks.
  • Check tire pressure regularly: Flat or underinflated tires can cause damage to the tire structure, posing a risk during your next ride.

Get into a habit of checking your pressure before you ride and keep a pump nearby so you can adjust it. (The recommended tire pressure is embossed on the tire.)

5. Child and Pet Safety

If you have children or pets in your home, make sure your e-bike is stored in a way that prevents accidental damage or injuries.

  • Keep out of reach: Store your e-bike in a place where children or pets cannot tamper with it, especially the battery.
  • Secure the bike: However you store your e-bike, make sure that it’s stable and won’t tip over. Using a rack or locking it securely will prevent it from being knocked over, which could cause injury or damage.

6. Proper Security

If you’re storing your e-bike in a shared or public space, or even in your own garage, theft prevention is a safety concern.

  • Lock the bike securely: Even in garages or storage units, using a strong lock or alarm system can help prevent theft.
  • Remove the battery: If possible, remove the battery from the bike and store it separately in a secure place, as it is one of the most valuable parts of the bike.

Keeping It Safe

When storing your e-bike, prioritizing battery safety, proper temperature control, and secure storage can mitigate many safety risks.

Regularly checking the condition of your battery and keeping your bike away from potential hazards will ensure that your e-bike remains safe and functional while in storage.
